ISBN industry partner PBA (the Professional Beauty Association) reports that Arizona has officially become the first state to issue multistate licenses for licensed cosmetologists through the interstate Cosmetology Licensure Compact, currently active in 13 states.
The multi-state license works on a mutual recognition model, much like the driver’s license compact and allows for seamless movement between member states, says Leslie Roste, PBA Director, State Relations & Policy Development.
“We are hopeful that our other 12 member states will be live and issuing licenses soon, but expect that most our member states will be live by Q2 of 2027. This has been a long and expensive project, mostly funded by the Future of the Beauty Industry Coalition (FBIC). The esthetics compact has 3 member states and will likely be active by mid 2027, creating new licensure mobility for another segment of our industry.”
ISBN is actively involved in industry-impacting legislation through FBIC. Individual brands and executives are encouraged to sign up as well at FBIC.org.
